Belly of the Beast
Medium: Documentary Film
Skills: Filming, video editing, interviewing, narrative structure
Created for Introduction to Documentary Film, this project explores the experiences of international students at Skidmore, focusing on identity, racialization in the U.S., and the tension between institutional narratives and lived realities.
Sociological lens:
This project was grounded in sociological understandings of race, power, and institutions. Sociology gave me the tools to critically examine how universities function as social systems—and how individual experiences often diverge from official representations.
Hadhaantha (Memories)
Medium: Photography & Digital Editing
Skills: Visual storytelling, Adobe Photoshop, conceptual development
Hadhaantha(meaning memories in Dhivehi) was created for Picturing Time. The project reflects on my first semester at Skidmore and the instability of navigating new identities, routines, and spaces as an international student. The work blends images from campus, home, and personal messages from my family.
Sociological lens:
Sociology shaped how I thought about identity formation, transition, and belonging.
Samoa ISP Research Project
Medium: Research Paper & Presentation
Skills: Ethnographic interviewing, qualitative analysis, research design, presentation
During my semester abroad in Samoa, I conducted independent research on how customary land tenure practices and the Samoan concept of Vā (social-relational space) shape local tourism. I interviewed local business owners and worked to faithfully represent how cultural knowledge informs economic practices.
Sociological lens:
Sociology allowed me to analyze how global systems like tourism interact with local social structures. I examined how economic practices are embedded in relationships, power dynamics, and cultural values—rather than treating them as purely market-driven.
Migration & Diaspora Podcast
Medium: Audio / Podcast
Skills: Interviewing, audio editing (Audacity), qualitative coding, secondary research, storytelling
This podcast project explored migration, labor, and belonging through the experiences of Mohawk ironworkers and their connection to New York City. Working collaboratively, I conducted interviews, analyzed secondary sources, and helped shape the narrative structure of the episode.
Sociological lens:
Sociology helped me situate individual migration stories within larger structures of labor, colonial history, and urban development. I learned how to connect personal narratives to systems of mobility and inequality, transforming interviews into a broader social analysis.
Eid Al-Adha: Bodu Maali
Skills: Cultural documentation, visual ethnography
This photographic series documents Bodu Maali, a festive tradition in Hinnavaru, Maldives, where children dress as sea monsters symbolizing evil being driven away by good. The project captures ritual, movement, and collective joy within a community context.
Sociological lens:
Sociology helped me understand this tradition not just as a cultural event, but as a social practice that reinforces shared values, collective identity, and intergenerational connection.
Sociology has shaped how I approach every project. It has taught me to:
-
See individual stories as part of larger systems
-
Analyze power, institutions, and inequality
-
Use data to contextualize lived experience
-
Ask structural questions alongside human ones
-
Connect research findings to real-world implications
